This Skill Set reflects the role of individuals working as developing and emerging leaders in a range of contexts.
Leadership often begins at the team leader level across a wide range of enterprise and industry contexts. Team leaders communicate effectively, ensure team performance and develop effective relationships in the workplace. Across the breadth of industry, team leaders are responsible for implementing operational plans.

BSBLDR401 Communicate effectively as a workplace leader
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, including understanding the context, choosing methods of communication to suit the audience, and following up. This unit applies to managers, supervisors and team leaders required to communicate with other persons within the workplace. Communication skills cover a range of methods and contexts within principally structured environments.
BSBLDR402 Lead effective workplace relationships
This unit defines skills, knowledge and outcomes required to use leadership to promote team cohesion. It includes motivating, mentoring, coaching and developing the team and forming the bridge between the management of the organisation and team members. This unit applies to team leaders, supervisors and new or emerging managers where leadership plays a role in developing and maintaining effective workplace relationships. It applies in any industry or community context. At this level work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures, which require planning and evaluation and leadership and guidance of others.
BSBLDR403 Lead team effectiveness
This unit defines skills, knowledge and outcomes required to plan and supervise the performance of the team and develop team cohesion. It applies team leaders, supervisors and new emerging managers who have an important leadership role in the development of efficient and effective work teams. Leaders at this level also provide leadership for the team and bridge the gap between the management of the organisation and the team members. As such they must 'manage up' as well as manage their team/s.
BSBMGT402 Implement operation plan
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement the operational plan by monitoring and adjusting operational performance, planning and acquiring resources and providing reports on performance as required. It applies to individuals who plan activities to achieve the measurable, stated objectives of the team and the organisation. At this level work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures which require planning, evaluation, leadership and guidance of others.
There are no formal educational entry requirements for this course.
To support a successful learning experience student will require:
1. Minimum technology requirements including access to a device (desktop/mobile/tablet), reliable internet connection and use of a personal email account.
2. Access to a current workplace or team environment which can be used as the context for selected assessment tasks which are carried out in real situations.
Course delivery and support
The units within this Skill Set are delivered online via MiTraining’s Learning Management System (LMS). When you enrol you’ll be asked to setup your LMS student account and will then be granted immediate access to the course materials including:
- Course content and reading materials
- Activities and assessments
- Discussion forums
- Supplementary learning materials
All accredited courses include assessment. To gain a Statement of Attainment for this Skill Set you must attempt the assessment and be deemed “competent” in each unit of competency.
You will be provided with detailed Learner Instructions for each unit which comprehensively outline the assessment tasks including detailed assessment procedures and a benchmark for completing each task.
Assessments may take the form of written responses, projects, demonstrations, case studies or verbal discussions with our assessor. It’s all about ensuring you are developing the skills and knowledge requirements of the unit of competency.
This course can be completed flexibly over six months. You will have a full 12 month’s access to the learning resources to provide additional time and flexibility.
MiTraining recommends committing 5-10 hours per week to your study including reading the course material, attempting course activities and progressively working on the course assessment tasks.
You may complete the course more quickly depending on how much time you can dedicate to the course work requirements.
The four units of competency provide credit towards the qualification BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
What are the course payment options?
There is a one-off, up front course fee that can be paid by credit card or an invoice (by request).
Do I have to do the assessment?
To receive a Statement of Attainment you must complete the assessment and be deemed competent in each unit of competency.
Who is the course accredited with?
These units from the BSB Business Services Training Package when used with relevant vocational competencies meet industry requirements for team leaders. Vocational education and training packages are regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).
